Armed Groups in Eastern Sudan

Like Darfur and South Sudan, Eastern Sudan has suffered decades of marginalization. Unlike the rebellions that took place in those two regions, the Eastern opposition groups never succeeded in capturing significant territory and thus had little leverage when it came to negotiating a settlement. A significant underpinning for the Eastern rebellion was lost when the SPLA withdrew its support as part of the CPA. The subsequent Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement of October 2006 provided a very modest measure of political freedom and representation in exchange for a cessation of hostilities that still stands.
